Brief Introduction of The College of Sciences

The College of Sciences(COS)of Shanghai University(SHU) is a fundamental knowledge and research-oriented college focusing on modern fundamental science theories and related applied science and technology. The College consists of 5 academic units, namely, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, and Institute for Sustainable Energy, Nano-Science & Technology Research Center, holding a talent-cultivation system with complete education levels covering bachelor, master and doctorate programs. There are 3 national postdoctoral research stations and 3 first-level disciplines with doctorate degree certification (mathematics, physics and chemistry); 4 first-level disciplines with master degree certification (mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry); 6 undergraduate subjects (mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computational science, applied physics, microelectronics science and engineering, electronic information science and technology, applied chemistry). Its affiliated research units include 7 national and provincial research platforms (International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Nanocomposite Functional Materials, granted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Engineering Center of Materials Composite and Advanced Dispersion, granted by the Ministry of Education,Shanghai Institute of Mathematics and Systems Science, Shanghai Key Laboratory of High Temperature Superconducting, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of New Materials and Application for Resources and Environment, Shanghai Professional Technology and Service Platform for Advanced Composite Material Design and Manufacturing, and Shanghai New Materials and Application Industry-University-Research Cooperation Center), 1 Shanghai first-class disciplines (mathematics), 2 Shanghai plateau disciplines (mathematics and physics), 1 Shanghai youth talent training base—the workstation on mathematics practice workstation of Shanghai University, as well as 3 talent training experimental bases - mathematics laboratory, physics experiment center, basic chemistry experimental center.

The College boasts its highly qualified middle-aged and young backbone and experienced faculty of totally 265 full-time teachers, consisting of 85 professors (including 4 academicians), 229 teachers of which hold doctoral degrees. A system of high-level innovative talents has been formed with nice connections among the teams.

The College aims to cultivate first-class science talents and establish a world-leading academic highland. In line with the development of Shanghai University towards a world-leading university, the College strives to build a distinctive, world-class fundamental and research-oriented college, and is committed to cultivate outstanding and innovative science talents with a cutting-edge academic view, a solid foundation and a global vision. In recent years, students of the College have achieved excellent results in the Challenge Cups and mathematical modeling contests. Graduates are particularly favored by employers for their solid foundation, strong adaptability, innovative spirit, and full potential for development. In 2021, the proportion of students entering schools of a higher grade reached 49.65% and the employment rate reached 94.65%. At present, the college has enrolled 1048 undergraduates, 963 postgraduates, 155 doctoral students, and 29 post-doctoral staff in stations.

The College has a strong academic atmosphere and enjoys high academic reputation at home and abroad, particularly in algebra theory and quantum computing, differential equations and complex systems, large-scale scientific and engineering computations, optimization methods and network analysis, of the discipline of mathematics; in the functional structure of condensed matter and basic physics, low dimensional and computational physics, quantum information physics, of the discipline of physics; and in energy chemistry, drug synthesis, supermolecular chemistry, environmental catalytic chemistry, computer chemistry, of the discipline of chemistry. These basic subjects cross with fields of new energy, new materials, finance, management, environmental science, nanotechnology, life science and information science, etc. They actively carry out cross-disciplinary studies closely related to engineering disciplines such as the material design and key technology integrated computing, superconducting materials, environmental management and protection technology and so on.

The College pushes ahead scientific research, and actively attracts and cultivates excellent talents of related disciplines, makes efforts to expand the influence among academic counterparts both at home and abroad as well as enhances its academic contribution towards the university. In the previous five years, the college has undertaken nearly 200 key research projects, including national 973 sub-projects, the national 973 preliminary research projects, the national 863 projects, the national fundamental research program, key projects of NSFC, NSFC for distinguished young scholars, NSFC for excellence young sciences, joint fund for petrochemical industry of NSFC, general programs of NSFC and other important scientific research projects. SCI retrieval number of academic papers accounts for almost 50% of Shanghai University every year. The College achieved over 60 teaching achievement prizes and the national and provincial scientific and technological achievement prizes.

The College also maintains an extensive international academic exchange and cooperation relationship and keeps a close academic communications with the scientists in renowned universities and institutes in the United States, Russia, Great Britain, France, Australia, Germany, Spain, Japan, Canada as well as those areas including Hong Kong and Taiwan of China. High-level international and domestic academic conferences and lectures are frequently organized by the College, foreign experts and scholars are continually invited to give lessons and conduct academic exchanges and scientific cooperation, meanwhile, outstanding teachers of the College are selected to go abroad for the purpose of teaching, study and cooperation.

Combining with the development of Shanghai University towards a world-leading and distinctive comprehensive research university, the College will continue to strive for first-class achievements, cultivating talented people with solid foundation and full development potential, making efforts to develop its key disciplines into the first-class in China and other disciplines into the high-ranking internationally.
